Not so much panic stricken

I feel for those in Texas affected by Hurricane Ike. Many of them lost their homes, everything of value. For many, it will take years to get back to some semblance of "normal."
Then, there are the folks around here affected by Ike. Thank God, no one has lost their homes here, but we are affected in another way.
We are running out of gas.
The refineries are slowly coming back online, and we will have normal supply by end of this week-first of next week. The important thing is not to panic, give them time, and we will not run out of gas everywhere.
That last sentence is a basis for capitalist economics. That sentence was not uttered enough here in western NC today. Everybody has panicked, running most of the stations in Hickory and the surrounding area out of gas! Folks, you think you are doing a smart thing- YOU ARE MAKING THE SITUATION WORSE!
I am not panicked. God did not give me a spirit of fear. He gave me a spirit of power, love, and sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)! I may not find gas for a few days. God will take care of me. And the waythe political system is headed, soon the government will, although I don't want them to.
Lighten up people. IT WILL BE ALL RIGHT.

Insanity 101

They say insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting the same result each time. It's a good definition. I still wish I knew who "they" were...
Three days a week, I attend college. I get up 30 minutes earlier, rush to get my wife, my son, and myself where we need to be by 7:50 (I would say 8, but I need to get a good space.) I get to one class, barely on time, and I don't really like it that much, but I need to take it, I need to be active in it, because capitalism needs to be defended.
Then I go to my favorite class, Business Law. I wait on an elevator that is the slowest I have ever seen. It stops on my floor, but don't get on! It still has to get on the bottom floor. But you should have got on, because it picked up people on the bottom floor, and now it's full. Take the stairs.
This class is usually short, because he is retiring next year. He teaches, you learn, you leave. Most go to study, some go to goof off. I go to work. I am thankful for my job. I really am. But I have done the same thing for eight years! Some days it's good. Some days, um, no.
The only relief I have is that I get to come home to that wife and son. We put him to bed, and I pick up a textbook. I have read more in the past month than I have read in thirteen years.
Two days later, (MWF) I do it again.
It is insane.
But down the road, it will pay off.

Ron Burgundy for President?

All right. It's time to get political.
How many of you remember the movie Anchorman? I made a mistake of watching the unrated version, primarily because it's all the video stores offer. Anyway, it's very funny.
If you haven't watched it, quick plot. Will Ferrell is Ron Burgundy, a 70's (I think) news anchor who is a big facade. He doesn't exist past the personality he exudes in front of the camera.
Anyway, Christina Applegate's character is brought in to be his co-anchor, and a feud ensues. She discovers his dependency on the teleprompter. He's nothing without it. So she has the operator change his ending catchphrase from "You stay classy, San Diego," to "Go F- yourself, San Diego." It ruins him for a time.
There is a candidate for President this year JUST like Ron Burgundy. In front of the prompter, he is powerful. He is stately. He is charismatic. He is almost god-like! When the prompter goes off, he stutters, stammers, er, um, er, um, well... he's useless! He doesn't have original thought in his head, he just repeats lines and doctrines that have been placed in his head for all these years.
He is an empty suit running an empty campaign full of empty promises.
He is Barack Obama. He is dangerous, and he wants to be President.
Now you stay classy.

The start of things to come

This is a new place to be...

To introduce myself to you, my name is Jonathan. This blog is called "The Wide scope of things." It is called that because Wide is in my last name. From middle school through high school, it was kind of a nickname for me, partially because of my size and my name. I am a big boy.
Why am I here? Well, it's really for a college class. I graduated Hibriten High School in 1995, and took a break from school. Thirteen years later, the break is over. If I had known financial aid and the process to get into school was so easy, I would have done it sooner. Part of the assignment in my intro to computers class this week is to come to this website and create a blog.
That's not a problem. I have a little blog already, on MySpace. I will try to link those blogs to this site, so that any one interested in what big little ol' me has to say can take a look. If you want to look beforehand, go to myspace.com/jlwide.
I'm excited about the future. I'm excited about what going to college will bring in my life. I'm excited about seeing my little boy grow up. I'm excited about my upcoming 5-year wedding anniversary. I'm excited about Sarah Palin. I'm excited about breakfast in the morning, and I don't even know what it is!
I'm even more excited to see what future posts will bring...
